Support Eating Disorders Awareness Week and help Beat Sock it to Eating Disorders
Beat is the UK’s only national charity supporting people affected by eating disorders. Sock it to Eating Disorders is our annual fundraising and awareness raising campaign taking place during Eating Disorders Awareness Week, 24 February-2 March 2014. We would love your school to take part and to say thank you we've produced a free PHSE resource on eating disorders.
What are eating disorders?
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses affecting over 1.6 million people in the UK – young people aged 12-20 are the most at risk of developing an eating disorder - however the NHS has recently reported a significant number of hospital admissions for young people in the 10-14 age range.
Why support Eating Disorders Awareness Week in your school?
In the Ofsted Report ‘Not yet good enough: PSHE education in schools’ published May 2013 when asked which topics they would like to learn about in school but are currently not, over three in ten (31%) of the panelists of students wanted more information on eating disorders such as anorexia.
FREE PSHE resources
To help address this issue Beat has developed a FREE comprehensive PSHE classroom activity for primary schools. When you receive your Sock it to Eating Disorders fundraising pack we will also provide you with resources aimed specifically at KS2 with starter and plenary which will contribute to SEAL targets. The activity will provide you with the resources to run a 30 minute lesson, including a downloadable film on eating disorders together with a quiz and discussion topics.
