Dear Headteacher

Using inspection to improve

After I left Ofsted in the summer, a number of headteachers spoke to me about the inspection framework that will be in place from January 2012. As I said when I launched the consultation on it, while the new framework builds on the current one, there are also significant changes.

Many of those I spoke to were keen to use the new framework to help them do their jobs more effectively. In response to these discussions with headteachers, I have organised a conference in London, not only to promote greater understanding of the new framework but also to explore ways in which you might use it to support improvement in your school.

The conference, aimed at you and your senior staff, will be held on Friday 3 February 2012 at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Lambeth. It will give you ready access to over a dozen experts, all of whom have experience as senior HMI. Many of them have been involved in developing the new framework and each is an associate in my company, Christine Gilbert Associates (CGA).

The conference programme consists of a number of formal presentations on the new framework itself, including on literacy and on self-evaluation, with an emphasis on using inspection to accelerate improvement. Time has also been built in throughout the day for table discussions with experienced inspectors.

Attendance is limited to 100 so that participants can have all their questions answered, either in small groups or in the plenary sessions. I shall chair the conference and, together with expert speakers and inspector facilitators, I will be available for informal discussions over coffee and lunch.

If you would like to attend, full details and joining instructions are available at:

Yours sincerely

Christine Gilbert
