THE REVIVAL OF IRISH
Failed project of a Political Elite
by Dónal Flynn
Taking a political perspective, the book mulls over the Irish Government project to change, to one extent or another, the language spoken by the population and how that Project failed. It posits the inevitability of that failure even from the project’s start.
Ninety years later the Fine Gael policy of ending Compulsory Irish in the Leaving Certificate examination, announced by Enda Kenny in 2006, is noted as one milestone in the course of the Revival, and the priority given by Ruairi Quinn to the reduction of illiteracy among schoolchildren is noted as another.
