Dear Headteacher and Literacy Co-ordinator,

Would you like a best-selling children's author to visit your school this year?

As a children's non-fiction author my visits offer something different from ones made by fiction writers or poets. I offer a variety of sessions for all ages (EYFS, KS1 and KS2), including talks, readings, writing and role-play workshops.

You could book me for a whole school visit, or you might want me to work with a particular year group or class. You choose what you would like.

I've listed two of my most popular sessions below – you'll find full details of these, together with other sessions, on my website.

ww1 frederick horsnell

The First World War in the words of a soldier who was there

A unique experience in which I role-play in uniform as Corporal Fred Horsnell, whose trench letters I own, written 1915–1918.

I use extracts from Corporal Horsnell's letters to tell his personal story while on active service on the Western Front. Children then write biographical recounts, or letters modelled on the real letters they've heard.

This session would link in well with your Remembrance Day (11 November) work.

Queen Elizabeth II – Her Story

The story of the little princess who became Britain's longest-reigning monarch, based on my best-selling children's biography of the Queen.

The session includes a letter-writing activity.
