Dear Sir,

Mandinka Roots (originally trading as Tribal Vibes) offers drumming, dance workshops and drum circles to a wide range of groups and projects for people of all ages. With a focus on participation, encouragement and empowerment, everyone is invited to contribute and have fun. The facilitator Oumar Alex Sagna is experienced in working with groups of adults, young people and people with learning disabilities

Oumar Alex Sagna created Mandinka Roots after becoming interested in community drumming and has developed her own skills after 20 years’ experience of drumming and dancing in his home country Senegal before coming to the UK and has a current Enhanced CRB check.

Mandinka Roots drum circles and workshops encourage everyone to contribute regardless of ability, age or gender and is a fun entry-level learning experience that is accessible to anyone who wants to participate. There are up to 30 djembe drums of various sizes available for participants to use as well as some small percussion instruments for those who wish to shake and tap instead! A drum circle or workshop typically lasts for approximately one hour (or possibly up to two hours or more dependent on group or event requirements) and Mandinka Roots will endeavor to be flexible around requirements which can be discussed further upon enquiry.

There are many benefits to drumming, and participation in this activity can have a positive impact in the following areas:

  • Health and Wellbeing, enhances wellbeing
  • encourages team work, raises self esteem
  • empowerment, encourages co-operation
  • encourages self-expression
  • >stress relief, relaxation
  • improves co-ordination

Overall, an excellent way for anybody, no matter what their age or ability, to learn the basics of music as well as experiencing a different musical culture, and the fun and sense of achievement of making music as part of a group. It is the ideal activity for KS1-KS4, everyone is able to participate regardless of ability and it is often the hard to reach young people that make the most rapid and progress.
