Dear Headteacher

I am writing to you on behalf of Dr David Hemery CBE, Olympic Gold Medallist.  In 2005 London won the right to host the 2012 Games.  At that time Lord Coe, the bid Chairman, asked David to help create a legacy that would inspire the youth of Britain and the rest of the world.  As a sportsman, Doctor of Education and leader in the field of Leadership Development, David created, with a team of educationalists and business people, the ‘Be the Best you can Be!’ programme to inspire, engage and empower young people.

David wishes to speak to groups of Headteachers to share how the ‘Be the Best you can Be!’ programme is already running in schools across the country and his wish to involve your school.  He would like to address the gathering of Headteachers in your area and would appreciate knowing when a 30 minute window might be available on your agenda.

The ‘Be the Best you can Be!’ programme runs for approximately two terms and is aimed at year seven but can be targeted at other age groups.  A CPD day, to enhance facilitation skills, is run for the staff who will lead the programme, usually PHSE, PE and Year Tutors.  This is followed by a Launch with an inspirational talk by an Olympian or Paralympian ending with the challenge to follow their dreams.

The ‘Be the Best you can Be!’ programme helps schools deliver the Aims of the National Curriculum i.e. enabling young people to become:

  1. Successful learners who enjoy learning, making progress and achieving;
  2. Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives;
  3. Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society

Independent assessment showed:

  • Increased aspirations
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Enhanced staff-student relationships
  • Greater engagement in school

Please find attached our brochure and the Case Study of Swindon Academy who were one of our pilot schools.  Swindon Academy have reported no permanent exclusions and reduced behavioural problems in the year group, for the whole year following the programme.  The Principal of Swindon Academy was so delighted with the effects of the programme that this September she chose to have us run the CPD day for all staff to enhance their facilitation skills.

Our website address is www.21stcenturylegacy.com where you will find a short film outlining the origin of the programme and feedback from some of our pilot schools’ students and staff.
