Border Moves is a group of experienced professional artists/teachers based in the North West. We visit primary and secondary schools teaching dance and percussion from Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and South Asia. We have a particular interest in exploring the relationships between different art forms and the links between traditional and contemporary styles.
We aim to help children recognize and develop their artistic creativity and to develop skills that can be transferred to other areas of their lives i.e. language skills, physical co-ordination, observational and social skills. Our workshops are relevant to the criteria set out for the national curriculum in music, dance and citizenship (raising awareness and developing appreciation of other cultures). We have built up an excellent reputation over the past 8 years and now have over 100 regular schools, we are always happy to pass on names and numbers of head teachers for references if required.
A whole-day workshop will be presented at your school. Two artists - one dancer and one percussionist - will attend your school to teach 6 one-hour sessions. Different dance and musical fusions will be explored, e.g. Street dance-soca, samba-reggae, African hip-hop... We will focus on developing performance skills, building bridges between traditional and contemporary music and dance forms and encouraging children to explore their own ideas. Each day culminates in a performance of the dances and rhythms learned.
