Understanding
by Design (UbD) is an acclaimed framework for
planning curriculum and assessment. UbD is widely
used throughout North America, and several nations,
most recently Australia, have cited its influence on
their national curricula.
In this 2-day workshop, Jay McTighe, co-author of
Understanding by Design, will explore the principles
and practices of UbD through a series of
thought-provoking exercises and design experiences.
Participants will examine the following questions;
What is understanding and how does it differ from
“knowing”? What “enduring” knowledge is worth
understanding? How will we know that students truly
understand and can apply their knowledge in a
meaningful way? How might we design our courses and
units to emphasize understanding rather than
“coverage”?
How should we teach for understanding and transfer?
How might we integrate 21st Century Skills into an
already overcrowded curriculum? How can “backward
design” help create a more coherent curriculum
across the grades? |

priorities and determining the “big ideas”
worthy of deep understanding;
- use essential questions to frame curriculum
and focus on “big ideas”;

use in assessing the degree of student
understanding;
- examine the six facets of understanding and
their use on creating assessment tasks;
