Dear Head of Maths

Locations will be based throughout England.

From regulating major industry to reducing pollution incidents, from improving water and air quality to preventing the risk of flooding, it’s our job at the Environment Agency to protect and improve the environment throughout England and Wales. Take on this developmental role, and you can play an important role in ensuring that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world.

This is an excellent opportunity to get the foot in the door of flood risk management. You’ll get the best of both worlds – completing a foundation degree and building up practical experience through work-based training and getting paid for your time in the workplace. Plus, throughout your course, you’ll be paired with an experienced mentor. You’ll spend the first nine months in full-time study at the University of West England (UWE) in Bristol.

The next 15 months will be spent with the Environment Agency or a local authority on a work-based training and development programme. You’ll have the chance to gain exposure to a wide range of flood risk management activity as you rotate through a number of teams. During year 2, you will attend UWE for approximately four one-week study blocks. There will be a number of online e-learning assessments together with a major project that you will need to complete each year.

  • strong mathematical abilities will be essential, so you’ll need A-level mathematics or equivalent – a full list of entry requirements can be seen on the UWE website;
  • you’ll also need a well-developed sense of spatial awareness together with an understanding of form and structure for the engineering element of the course;
  • highly motivated and professionally minded, you will have the determination, resilience, and organisational skills to complete self-study online modules;
  • passionate about the environment, you will be keen to develop your career in flood risk management and ready to take on further opportunities with us after the course.

In the first academic year you will study full-time at the University of the West of England. In the final 15 months, during your work-based training, you’ll receive up to £15,000 training allowance (maximum of £3,000 in the first year) which is free from tax and National Insurance contributions. Your tuition fees, textbooks in both years will be paid for. Accommodation during your study weeks in year 2 will also be paid for.

We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
