Fathers' Story Week 14-20 June
Fathers’ Story Week – has your school signed up?

Children’s Laureate and award-winning children’s poet Michael Rosen is the latest to back Fathers’ Story Week – and more than 15 charities and professional bodies have pledged their support.  Schools, pre-schools and nurseries across the country are signing up and making use of the free resources available …

What is it?
Fathers’ Story Week runs from 14th June and culminates on Fathers’ Day (20 June).

Every primary school, pre-school and nursery across the country is being encouraged to sign up at www.fathersstoryweek.org  and download the free resources offering guidance on how schools can better engage with dads, ideas for at-home activities for dads and their children as well as ways in which dads can be supported in being more involved in their children’s school life.

When is it?
Fathers’ Story Week runs from 14th June and culminates on Fathers’ Day (20 June).
As part of the week, the Fatherhood Institute is teaming up with children’s charity Barnardo’s to run a ‘bring your dad to school day’ on Friday 18 June – where children are encouraged to dress up as their dads and bring them into school, and donate £1 to charity.

How can I get involved?

Why is it important that dads are involved?
Evidence shows that children’s educational attainment can be greatly improved where their fathers take an interest in their learning.  In particular:

  • Positive engagement between father and child is linked to higher IQ at age 7 and 11, and better exam results at 16
  • The more a father reads to his 1-2 year old, the greater the child’s interest in books later
  • Fathers exert greater influence than mothers on boys’ educational choices

The Fatherhood Institute has developed Fathers’ Story Week to support primary schools and early years settings who want to increase the engagement of fathers in their children’s learning.
