Re: Little Samurai Warriors – how it links with SEAL and EYFS Development Matters

We are a martial art company called Kaisho Martial Arts Ltd and for the past 3 years, have been working on a programme called Little Samurai Warriors. The programme is aimed at children from foundation/reception to year 2 and has been running in a number of schools within Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.  

The Little Samurai Warrior programme offers a unique contribution to a school’s programme and can be easily integrated within existing curriculum provision based around the Development Matters framework of supporting the development of its pupils’ social and emotional development.

In particular, Little Samurai Warriors helps promote children’s:

  • Self-respect
  • Self-esteem
  • Respect for others

It also helps them to:

  • Develop greater self-control
  • Become more assertive

The format of the programmes gives pupils the opportunity to practice their listening skills – indeed, listening carefully is an essential skill if they are to master the techniques modelled on the DVD.

Many schools have incorporated S.E.A.L as a critical component of their work in this area. Early Years and Foundation Stage practitioners will also be familiar with the Development Matters framework. The information illustrates how Little Samurai Warriors will support staff in helping their pupils with both S.E.A.L and Development Matters.

Whilst running the Little Samurai Warrior programme, it was highlighted by a number of schools that they would like this programme to work in conjunction with their SEAL/PSHE curriculum. It was from there that we worked with a number of Primary School Teachers who are experienced in SEAL and PSHE to produce a DVD which would work within schools.

The DVD also stars BBC TV Children’s Presenter Nat Roni who is widely recognised for presenting on Cbeebies.
