This annual Restorative Approaches in Education and Residential Child Care conference has become the popular ‘home’ conference for all those working restoratively with young people.
Over the years, this event has brought together professionals from a variety of disciplines: teachers, social workers, education and school managers, YOTS personnel and local authority officers and elected members. The conference is unfailingly challenging and inspirational.
Restorative approaches continue to prove to offer effective responses to conflicts, disruption and anti-social behaviour. They are based on a philosophy of mutual respect, consideration, shared accountability and collaborative problem-solving which needs to permeate the ethos of any institution adopting the approach. This approach will influence all day-to-day interactions between all members of that community.
In residential care this is being explored by linking restorative approaches to social pedagogy. In schools there is an emerging relational and restorative pedagogy that links what is taught, how it is taught and how mistakes and challenges are dealt with. These exciting developments give us the theme of our conference for this year.

Senior managers will share how they are supporting their staff to adopt a social, relational and restorative pedagogy into their day-to-day practice.

11.40 WORLD CAFE: Examining Day-To-Day Restorative Approaches
Host: Dr Belinda Hopkins, Author and Director, Transforming Conflict
This is the opportunity in our conference for delegates to share their own experiences and questions. World Café is a unique forum in which everyone has the opportunity to talk in very small groups, experiencing the restorative process called ‘circling’. In this way people will have some new ideas and plans they can take away and use. Those new to restorative approaches get an opportunity to learn from those with more experience in a safe supportive environment.

5.00 CLOSING PLENARY: ‘Restorative Approaches in Schools’ Film
The closing plenary will provide an opportunity for delegates to view a new film called simply ‘Restorative Approaches in Schools’ This film provides an overview of the whole school approach. Filmed in primary, secondary and special school settings, this film provides an inspiring insight into the impact of restorative approaches.

WORKSHOPS
WORKSHOP 1: The Restorative Classroom – Early Years
Workshop Leader: Suzanne Lee, Retired Infant School Headteacher
Suzanne’s practice in the classroom utilised restorative principles before she even heard about Restorative Approaches. The workshop will explore how those working with Early Years can use a restorative approach to enhance academic and social teaching and learning.
WORKSHOP 2: The Restorative Classroom - Special Education
Workshop Leader: Sue Fraser, Special Education Teacher
Sue teaches in a residential school for teenage boys with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Sue has responsibility for developing health, well-being, citizenship and restorative approaches and her classroom approach is informed by restorative principles at all times.
WORKSHOP 3: The Restorative Classroom- Primary and Early Secondary
Workshop Leader: Phil McCormick, Primary Teacher, Collingwood Primary School, Hull
Phil is renowned for his whole school restorative approach. He is also a freelance trainer of creative solutions in education. Phil will run a highly participative session using circles, pair and group work, integrating key restorative themes into day-to-day curriculum delivery
WORKSHOP 4: The Restorative Classroom - Making, Maintaining & Repairing Relationships
Workshop Leader: Belinda Hopkins, Author and Director – Transforming Conflict
Belinda shares the key ideas from her new book about developing a restorative pedagogy in classrooms from Key Stage 1 - 4, (book to be published by Optimus Publishing in summer 2011)
WORKSHOP 5: Combining Restorative Approaches & Social Pedagogy in Residential Care Settings
WORKSHOP 6: Daily Life in Residential care Settings where Restorative Approaches are Embedded
WORKSHOP 7: Writing Wrongs
A Restorative Practice Programme for Secondary Schools – giving students ‘ownership’ of restorative approaches
Workshop Leader: Lesley Parkinson, Education Consultant, Restorative Justice and Education Services
The Writing Wrongs programme has been developed with the aim of enabling students to enjoy and engage with the teaching and learning of restorative approaches. This workshop gives delegates the opportunity to experience some of the practical activities that students engage in through the Writing Wrongs programme, leading students towards their own conclusions around how to deal with wrong- doing/conflict in school settings and the wider community.
WORKSHOP 8: New to Restorative Approaches?
This workshop will provide an introductory session for those new to the field of restorative approaches in educational settings.
WORKSHOP 9: The Restorative Staffroom
This workshop will reflect on the key principles for developing a strong cohesive staff community with strategies for addressing everyone’s needs to enable them to give of their best at all times. The workshop will also offer a framework for repairing relationships when they break down.
WORKSHOP 10: Restorative Pedagogy in Practice
Secondary school teachers share their experiences of how restorative principles have informed how they deliver the curriculum, and how they have developed social responsibility and distributed leadership skills in their classrooms on a daily basis. Links between teaching, learning and classroom management will be made.
