Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land

Save a Little Donkey in the Holy Land this Christmas at your school’s nativity play.

Young NemoThe iconic image of Mary riding on a donkey with Joseph to Bethlehem is an essential part of every school’s nativity play.

But sadly, while the classic carol Little Donkey remains one of the nation’s favourites, the reality is many donkeys are abused and neglected in the Holy Land.

Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land, founded by British woman Lucy Fensom,  is the only charity in the area dedicated to saving these gentle creatures and we need YOUR help to carry on our work.

Could you raise money through your school’s Nativity play to save a donkey’s life?

Donkeys have been used as beasts of burdens for nearly 10,000 years but unfortunately, many donkeys in Israel and the Palestinian territories are ill-treated and abused. The harsh political climate and extreme poverty mean many of these animals suffer horrific injuries or are simply neglected.

Vet care is expensive and many owners simply cannot afford to pay for treatment for these essential working animals, even though they are often the only source of income for a whole family who rely on them for transport or farming.

As you prepare for your nativity play this year, please consider helping our charity. Can you raise money via a collection at the end of your play to adopt a donkey in the Holy Land?

For just £35, your donation will keep an animal safe, fed and watered for a year.

We can provide posters, collecting tins and information to set up a stall. Afterwards your pupils can follow the progress of their donkey through our updates and pictures of him or her through the following year.

We will also publish any poems or letters written by the children for your donkey in our newsletter and the children could see their work in print!

For teachers, it is a good opportunity to teach pupils about the history of donkeys as working animals, and the importance of looking after animals everywhere and always treating them kindly.

On our website we can provide some helpful links to resources on nativity plays, making costumes and suitable reading books for primary school pupils.

Please help us save a donkey’s life, this Christmas.
