Sambangra drumming begins with simple, accessible techniques, progressing toward a much deeper engagement with music and performance. The music combines samba’s potential to integrate a wide range of abilities and skill levels, with influences from bhangra, hip-hop, reggae & ska. This creates a musical form that can be quickly appreciated and owned by non-Brazilians.
Even better, there's evidence that this sort of drumming helps improve attention span, mental agility, social integration and even the immune system! (Bittmann M D et al - Medical Science Monitor, Feb '05)
We have experience of tailoring workshops to the needs of different groups. The first session is likely to include some cultural background, warm up exercises, games and one or more pieces of percussion music involving the complex interaction of simple parts. Singing, chanting and movement often form part of the activities.
