FAO Headteacher: Sign Language Days.  Ideas for fascinating KS1 & KS2 teaching and for memorable learning days to end this school year.

Sign Language Days

Dear Headteacher

I hope this email finds you well.

It’s almost the end of the school year and attention is turning what’s going to happen in the new school year and what’s going on in school to make this the rest of this year memorable.

I’m emailing you because I might have an idea to help you with that called Sign Language Days.

I’ve been teaching sign language to children since I was a child back in the 80’s. I was raised in a family of deaf people and have known sign language all my life. Since then I’ve worked with deafness charities and delivered deaf awareness and sign language classes to schools and groups on a regular basis.

They always seemed popular and the feedback I got was always very encouraging. Teachers passed it on to other schools – I love doing it.

I now offer a service for schools called Sign Language Days. You can now book me in to teach as many children as possible some fun and interesting sign language in a day and tick a few other important boxes in the process.

Learning about deafness and sign language aids Key Stage 1 & 2 learning about the human body and the equality and inclusion elements of what I do for your school can be highlighted during Ofsted inspections.

Learning about non-verbal communication can also break down barriers that sometimes exist with pupils with English as an additional language. A little understanding of sign language users also teaches about diversity in our communities.  I can spend time with teachers and give a talk on education for deaf children; teach the assembly a signed song or show children some of the equipment that deaf people use too.

The children can learn the signs for

  • Places
  • Animals
  • Colours
  • Transport
  • The alphabet
  • School topic
  • School song
  • And much more

There are lots of reasons why I think Sign Language Days are useful for schools, not just for the fun element, but for the additional value it has.

I’d love to discuss it with you – please feel free to get in touch, my contact details are below. I have slots available for the rest of this term and for the Autumn term.

Best wishes

Andy Palmer

P.S. All kids get stickers and certificates to show they have learned some sign language and the school gets a certificate too.
